The National Shooting Sports Foundation has been awarded a $2.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Justice to help educate the public about gun safety.
The two-year grant will provide funds for NSSF's Project ChildSafe program, which distributes free gun locks and produces messages about firearms safety.
"We'll work to build on previous efforts and further raise awareness of the simple precautions gun owners can take to store firearms securely when not in use," NSSF CEO Steve Sanetti said.
NSSF called the grant a "strong endorsement" about the effectiveness of Project ChildSafe and similar gun safety programs. Since its launch in 1999, Project ChildSafe has distributed more than 37 million free firearm safety kits across the country and in five U.S. territories, the association said.
"Programs like Project ChildSafe work because proper storage of firearms when not in use is the number one way to help prevent firearm accidents, misuse and theft," Sanetti said.
